The Messe de Nostre Dame (Mass of Our Lady), also known as the Mass for Four Voices, was composed by Guillaume de Machaut, a French poet, composer, and music theorist, around the year 1365. It is one of the earliest known complete polyphonic settings of the Ordinary of the Catholic Mass. Machaut was a highly influential composer of the Ars Nova style, a period of musical innovation and experimentation in the late medieval era. The Messe de Nostre Dame is considered one of his most significant works and an exemplary representation of the Ars Nova style. It is composed for four voices (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) and features complex harmonies, intricate interweaving of voices, and an expressive yet controlled musical language.
